A week with Jules

Lundi, café sur la place de Lenche. Monday, coffee on the place de Lenche.

Ton déménagement de samedi, tu as survécu ? Your move on Saturday, did you survive?

Me, I'd have thrown the lot into the sea.

Voice note, 0:34

Le moteur de la navette tousse tarpin. The shuttle boat's engine is coughing like mad.

Momo dit carburateur, moi je dis diva. Momo says carburettor, I say diva.

Et ta course de dimanche, tu l'as finie ? And your race on Sunday, did you finish it?

Lots of pizzas in front of the match, that's sacred.

Look, that match aged me ten years.

Tu es pour quelle équipe, toi ? Which team are you for?

Cette semaine, cinq jours. This week, five days.

You tell stories in the past better and better.

Prochaine fois, les pronoms. Dégun n'y échappe. Next time, pronouns. Nobody gets out of it.

Every Sunday, a letter.

La tua settimana

7 to 13 September · B1, since 24 August

An example from a week of Italian, not a real learner's week

At your level

The same message from Jules, written for three levels.

Le dimanche, je vais à la pêche. Je pars très tôt avec mon bateau. La mer est calme. Tu aimes la mer ?

On Sundays I go fishing. I leave very early with my boat. The sea is calm. Do you like the sea?

Tu as déjà pêché, toi ?

On Sunday I put the little boat in the water before dawn and went fishing out by the Frioul. Three fish, a beautiful sunrise and a cold coffee. Have you ever been fishing?

On Sunday I took the little boat out before dawn to go fishing by the Frioul, convinced I'd fill the cool box. In the end, three fish and a mistral that sent me back to port sooner than planned, but honestly, watching Marseille wake up from the sea beats any miraculous catch. What's your favourite spot for watching the day break?

A note from the person who built it

Parla gives you someone to practice a language with every day, so you don't forget what you've worked so hard to learn.

Questions.

Are the companions real people?

No. Every companion is an AI and says so in its first message. They have consistent lives, opinions and moods, and they remember what you tell them, but they are not people.

Does this replace my app or my tutor?

No. It adds a daily conversation beside them. Keep them.

What level do I need?

You can already hold a simple conversation in the language, roughly A2 and up. Companions shorten their sentences to match you. Complete beginners: not yet.

How do corrections work?

Inside the conversation, the way a friend would rephrase what you said. At most two patterns a week are raised, and Sunday's letter summarises them.

What is in the Sunday letter?

Days you talked, minutes, new words, words that came back, sentence length, your level, and the two patterns to work on. One letter per language, plus a PDF.

Why Telegram?

It is already on your phone and your desktop, voice notes work well, and there is nothing new to install.

Do I have to write every day?

No. You choose when a companion may write, and you answer when you can. Quiet weeks are allowed.

Can I talk instead of type?

Yes. Voice notes both ways.

Who reads my messages, and can I delete them?

Your messages build a companion's memory of you, nothing else. From one settings page you can download what your companions know, make them forget, or delete everything.

How much, and how do I cancel?

14 euro a month or 99 euro a year, VAT included, after a free week with no card. Pause for two or four weeks, or cancel, from one screen. No email, no call.

Other languages?

Italian, German, Spanish, English and French. Missing yours? Tell us which language you'd like to practice when you start your free week, and we write to you the day it opens.

Can I have two companions?

Yes, in one language or in several. One subscription covers every companion in every language, and each companion has its own settings.

It's still in there.
