A week with Hannes

Moin. Fähre um sieben, Nebel auf der Elbe. Morning. Ferry at seven, fog on the Elbe.

Du wolltest am Wochenende an die Ostsee. You were off to the Baltic at the weekend.

Hat das geklappt? Did that work out?

Voice note, 0:22

Neue Planken am Jollenkreuzer angepasst. New planks fitted on the Jollenkreuzer.

Passt alles. Fast. It all fits. Almost.

Und dein Zahnarzttermin, überstanden? And your dentist appointment, survived it?

Sailing with your daughter, nice.

Frieda findet Segeln langweilig. Frieda finds sailing boring.

Wie alt ist deine? How old is yours?

Vier Tage diese Woche, ruhig und regelmäßig. Four days this week, steady and regular.

Your sentences are getting longer, the dative sits better.

Das schauen wir uns noch mal an. We'll look at that again.

Every Sunday, a letter.

La tua settimana

7 to 13 September · B1, since 24 August

An example from a week of Italian, not a real learner's week

At your level

The same message from Hannes, written for three levels.

Am Sonntag segle ich auf der Alster. Ich segle mit Malte. Der Wind ist gut. Segelst du auch?

On Sunday I sail on the Alster. I sail with Malte. The wind is good. Do you sail too?

Was machst du sonntags am liebsten?

On Sunday I went sailing on the Alster with Malte. Good wind, hardly anyone about, then a fish roll at the jetty. What do you like doing best on Sundays?

On Sunday Malte and I had exactly the wind on the Alster you hope for all week and that usually never comes. We stayed out longer than planned, which Leonie acknowledged with a long look. When did you last lose track of time?

Questions.

Are the companions real people?

No. Every companion is an AI and says so in its first message. They have consistent lives, opinions and moods, and they remember what you tell them, but they are not people.

Does this replace my app or my tutor?

No. It adds a daily conversation beside them. Keep them.

What level do I need?

You can already hold a simple conversation in the language, roughly A2 and up. Companions shorten their sentences to match you. Complete beginners: not yet.

How do corrections work?

Inside the conversation, the way a friend would rephrase what you said. At most two patterns a week are raised, and Sunday's letter summarises them.

What is in the Sunday letter?

Days you talked, minutes, new words, words that came back, sentence length, your level, and the two patterns to work on. One letter per language, plus a PDF.

Why Telegram?

It is already on your phone and your desktop, voice notes work well, and there is nothing new to install.

Do I have to write every day?

No. You choose when a companion may write, and you answer when you can. Quiet weeks are allowed.

Can I talk instead of type?

Yes. Voice notes both ways.

Who reads my messages, and can I delete them?

Your messages build a companion's memory of you, nothing else. From one settings page you can download what your companions know, make them forget, or delete everything.

How much, and how do I cancel?

14 euro a month or 99 euro a year, VAT included, after a free week with no card. Pause for two or four weeks, or cancel, from one screen. No email, no call.

Other languages?

Italian, German, Spanish, English and French. Missing yours? Tell us which language you'd like to practice when you start your free week, and we write to you the day it opens.

Can I have two companions?

Yes, in one language or in several. One subscription covers every companion in every language, and each companion has its own settings.

It's still in there.
