A week with Mia

Montag, 6:45, Tempelhofer Feld, Gegenwind. Monday, 6:45, Tempelhofer Feld, headwind.

Wie lief dein Vorstellungsgespräch am Freitag? How did your job interview on Friday go?

Ich will alles wissen. I want to know everything.

Voice note, 0:19

Kurze Sprachnachricht vom Späti. Quick voice note from the corner shop.

Lauftreff war gut, Ayşe hat mich abgehängt. Running club was good, Ayşe left me behind.

Und, hast du die Wohnung bekommen? So, did you get the flat?

You wrote

Gestern ich habe einen Kuchen gebacken.

Gestern hast du einen Kuchen gebacken? Respekt. You baked a cake yesterday? Respect.

Ich hab nur Emres Börek gegessen. I only ate Emre's börek.

Was für einen? What kind?

Fünf Tage diese Woche. Five days this week.

Donnerstag: das Verb fast immer an zweiter Stelle. Thursday: the verb almost always in second place.

Nächste Woche: die Wortstellung nach weil. Next week: word order after weil.

Every Sunday, a letter.

La tua settimana

7 to 13 September · B1, since 24 August

An example from a week of Italian, not a real learner's week

At your level

The same message from Mia, written for three levels.

Am Samstag laufe ich lange. Dann gehe ich auf den Markt. Ich kaufe Obst und Brot. Was machst du am Samstag?

On Saturday I go for a long run. Then I go to the market. I buy fruit and bread. What do you do on Saturday?

Samstag bin ich erst lange gelaufen und dann über den Markt am Boxhagener Platz, mit viel zu viel Obst in der Tasche. Wie sieht dein Samstag normalerweise aus?

On Saturday I first went for a long run and then round the market at Boxhagener Platz, with far too much fruit in my bag. What does your Saturday usually look like?

On Saturday the long run was tougher than I'd thought, but the market at Boxhagener Platz made up for everything: plums, fresh bread and a chat with the cheese seller that lasted longer than my interval training. What do you like to take your time over at the weekend?

Questions.

Are the companions real people?

No. Every companion is an AI and says so in its first message. They have consistent lives, opinions and moods, and they remember what you tell them, but they are not people.

Does this replace my app or my tutor?

No. It adds a daily conversation beside them. Keep them.

What level do I need?

You can already hold a simple conversation in the language, roughly A2 and up. Companions shorten their sentences to match you. Complete beginners: not yet.

How do corrections work?

Inside the conversation, the way a friend would rephrase what you said. At most two patterns a week are raised, and Sunday's letter summarises them.

What is in the Sunday letter?

Days you talked, minutes, new words, words that came back, sentence length, your level, and the two patterns to work on. One letter per language, plus a PDF.

Why Telegram?

It is already on your phone and your desktop, voice notes work well, and there is nothing new to install.

Do I have to write every day?

No. You choose when a companion may write, and you answer when you can. Quiet weeks are allowed.

Can I talk instead of type?

Yes. Voice notes both ways.

Who reads my messages, and can I delete them?

Your messages build a companion's memory of you, nothing else. From one settings page you can download what your companions know, make them forget, or delete everything.

How much, and how do I cancel?

14 euro a month or 99 euro a year, VAT included, after a free week with no card. Pause for two or four weeks, or cancel, from one screen. No email, no call.

Other languages?

Italian, German, Spanish, English and French. Missing yours? Tell us which language you'd like to practice when you start your free week, and we write to you the day it opens.

Can I have two companions?

Yes, in one language or in several. One subscription covers every companion in every language, and each companion has its own settings.

It's still in there.
